Brianna sat down and tapped her pen on her desk. What is he doing? Why would he have said something like that? He knows how I feel. Brianna thought.

Chapter 23

“I can’t believe this! You’re dating Taylor Hanson!” Shelby laughed so loud that Brianna had to hold the phone away from ear.

“Shelby, we’re not dating.” Brianna said. “We’re just… well, we’re…” Brianna paused, trying to think of a way to describe the developing relationship between herself and Taylor.

“Uh-huh.” Shelby said in a sarcastic tone. “I know what you are.”

Brianna sighed. “He’s gonna talk things over with Trixie. I don’t want things to get too weird for her.”

“Bri, she’s a baby.” Shelby said.

“She’s aware of things. She’s old enough to notice a new person in the picture.”

“Yes but you can’t let her decide what happens between you and her dad. You are both adults you know.”

“I know but I have to let her be involved. The last thing I need is her being uncomfortable with me. Then I’ll really get hurt.”

“Yeah well, I guess you have a point.”

“He wants us to get together this weekend.”

“Sounds like his mind is made up. Just give it a shot Brianna.”

“Umm hmm. I’ll try.”

“Call me and let me know how it goes alright.”

“Okay. Bye.”

“Bye.” Brianna hung the phone up and rubbed her forehead. She felt a headache coming on. “Great.” she mumbled.

She slowly stood up and walked to the bathroom to get some Aspirin out of the medicine cabinet. She put two of the small pills into her mouth followed by a handful of water. She walked out of the bathroom, turning off the light, and went into the kitchen. Brianna stood in front of the refrigerator and rubbed the back of her neck.

Sighing, she took out a coke and closed the door. Realizing she really wasn’t hungry, she popped the can top and took a sip. She walked back into the living room and flopped down on the couch. Pulling the afghan over her legs, she flipped on the T.V.

After a moment, Brianna realized that she had gone through all of the
channels three times. She finally settled on the news. She was only half paying attention, when a picture of Taylor caught her eye. She held out the remote control and pushed the volume.

Lots of girls are going to be upset. Sorry ladies. It seems that Taylor Hanson is once again off of the single train.” The news anchorwoman was saying.

Brianna shook her head and quietly said “Oh no.”

Bracing for what they were about to say about her and Taylor, she took another drink of coke. She nearly spit it right back out when she saw a picture of Taylor talking with Lynn outside of his apartment building. Her back was toward the camera but it was Lynn.

Then they showed a picture of the two hugging as the anchor said “All that is known about her at this time is that she is older, although no one knows how much older, and that she and Taylor are keeping a very low profile.

The other anchor went on to tell about Taylor and the band and the studio. Brianna laughed out loud and could barley stop to answer the phone when it rang.

“Hello.” She said in a fit of giggles.

“All right, all right. You can stop laughing.” At that statement, Brianna laughed harder. “Brianna!” Taylor whined over the other end of the phone.

“What?” Brianna asked, trying to stop herself from embarrassing Taylor anymore than he obviously already was.

“Okay, seriously, you can stop now. Can you believe this? What idiots!”

“I know.” Brianna said, about to start laughing again.

Taylor could hear in her voice that she was smiling. “Stop.” He said seriously, making Brianna laugh out loud again. “Fine, you know what, I’ll call back when you don’t find this so funny.” Taylor chuckled.

“Well,” Brianna slowly stopped laughing, “What is it that you want me to do?” She asked.

“I know you can’t do anything. I just can’t… I mean for Christ’s sakes, Lynn?!”

“Well, she’s not a bad catch.”

“Brianna, stop it.” They both laughed. “Ugh, I need to call her I guess. I don’t even know when they took those pictures. Can I have her number please?”

“Sure.” Brianna reached over and picked up the piece of paper with Lynn’s number on it off of the table. She read off the number and asked “Do you want me to call?”

“No, I think I better. I just can’t grasp the fact that they did this.”

“Hmm, it is bad but she’ll understand. It’s just rumors.”

“Yeah. So, Umm, listen, while I have you on the phone. What about this weekend?”

“What about it?”

“Well, I talked to Trixie and she asked if you’d come over here.”

“Really?”

“Yeah. So how about Saturday, you come over here. We’ll order some pizza, rent some videos and you can… bond.” He smiled as he talked and Brianna felt herself blush.

“How did she seem when you talked to her.”

“Fine. She was fine.”

“What exactly did you tell her?”

“I told her that I had a friend named Brianna that I wanted her to meet.”

“And she said?”

“She asked how old you were. I told her and she asked if you were nice and if you liked Barbies.”

Brianna laughed slightly and asked, “And she wants to
meet me?”

“She asked if you could come over.”

“Well, I’d like that. We’ll talk about it tomorrow all right?”

“Sure, sure. I’ll see you tomorrow. I’m gonna call Lynn.”

“Okay, I’ll talk to you tomorrow then. Bye Taylor.”

“Bye Brianna.”

Brianna hung up the phone and turned the T.V. off. “Enough of that.” She said with a sigh.

“Hey Brianna? You in here?” Jessica poked her head in Brianna’s office.

“Yeah, come on in.” Brianna said.

“Hey, um, have you seen Taylor?”

“Not this morning, no.”

“Oh. Well, we were supposed to go over some things. I haven’t seen him though.” Jessica pushed her hands into the pockets of her jeans.

Brianna walked away from the file cabinet and over to her desk. “Maybe he just stepped out. Or maybe he’s recording.”

“Yeah, maybe. Well, if you see him tell him I’m in Avery’s office, okay. I’m gonna help her with some things.”

“Okay, I’ll let him know if I see him.” Brianna smiled.

“Thanks.” Jessica turned to go out of the door and then stopped. “Oh by the way, I think it’s great that you and Taylor are getting so close.”

“Who told you we were getting close?”

“Isaac… last night, Kevin and Allison were over. Isaac came to pick them up. We were talking and he said that he thinks you could be Tay’s girlfriend by the end of this week.”

“Really?” Brianna said, surprised and kind of annoyed.

“Yeah, he said Taylor told him that he wanted to have you over to mom and dad’s for a family dinner or something. That’s kind of a big deal in our family.”

“Family dinner?”

“Yes, it usually means things are serious and Ike said Taylor mentioned having you over next weekend. He was going to ask mom and dad about it Sunday.”

“Well, I don’t know anything about it.”

“Hmm, well, I’m just telling you what Ike told us. He seemed to be a little taken aback.”

“I’ll bet.”

“Trent and I were kind of shocked. It was like six months before Andrea was invited to have dinner with the family. Taylor is really moving things along with you. He’s a little impatient in my opinion.”

Brianna felt her annoyance shift from Isaac to Taylor. She sighed heavily and raised her eyebrows at Jessica.

“I really don’t see why he would be talking about anything like that.” Brianna crossed her arms over her chest. She wasn’t really angry as much as she was surprised and confused. “Taylor and I have spent a lot of time together, yes, but we’re not really in a relationship. He’s giving you the wrong idea talking about family dinners… especially if, in your family, that means that things are getting serious. He hasn’t said anything like that to me. Believe me Jessica, at this point, Taylor and I are friends. That’s all. Nothing more, nothing less.”

Jessica sighed. “All right then. I understand. If you see Taylor, tell him I’m ready when he is.”

“And you’re in Avery’s office. Yeah, I’ll tell him.”

“Okay.” Jessica walked out and closed the door.

Brianna sat down and tapped her pen on her desk. What is he doing? Why would he have said something like that? He knows how I feel. Brianna thought.

She decided that it would only distract her to even think about it anymore and she had work to do. She turned on the computer and began to arrange the schedule. Deciding to let it go for the time being and to find out from Taylor himself exactly what he was after and why he was in such a rush.

Although throughout the morning, she found herself unable to  completely ignore it and was a little bit worried about what she’d find out.
