Walls: Chapter 5

The whole family had been at the hotel almost a week, and Zac had spent most of his free time exploring the hotel’s stairwells and other places where he could sneak his way into. He ran fully force down the last flight of stairs and slammed into the exit door. The door flew open and banged on the wall as he came flying out of it. A man, getting ice at one of the machines in the hallway, just stared at him as he raced by.

Zac swiftly turned the corner and screeched to a halt. Taylor was walking out the doors by the pool. Zac patted himself on the back for not losing Taylor and hurriedly ran over to the doors.

Taylor had paused by the pool and was crouching down, staring into the crystal clear water. Zac sighed and waited. He anxiously tapped his fingers on the door’s handle. He hoped Taylor wouldn’t stay by the pool too long. He had been so excited to start his game of figuring out what the heck had been up with Taylor lately, and he most certainly didn’t want it to end with Taylor staring into a pool.

“What do you guys think about all these girls, huh? They all want to know if you guys have girlfriends. So can you give us the scoop? Are Hanson single?”

“We’re all…” Zac began, but Taylor broke in.

“Secretly married. Yeah, Ike here has four kids already… he likes to get an early start.”

Taylor looked disgusted… He mumbled something under his breath about “Stupid question, who cares if we have girlfriends.” He looked back down at his bottle, and continued muttering to himself. Sudden silence caught his attention and he looked up. When he lifted his head, he saw everyone just staring at him…

“You never let us in anymore, you’ve completely shut us out. We can’t talk to you, you just brush us off, you barely even say hello, anymore. You’ve never locked me and Zac out of a room in your life! We hear you in here, coughing your head off, and getting sick, and we can’t even get in to help you, or see if you’re okay!! You pretend we don’t exist!”

He was almost shouting now, and stopped, taking a deep breath to try to bring himself back down. He didn’t want Taylor to… well he didn’t know what he didn’t want Taylor to do, but he felt like he was walking on glass with him. One wrong move and he’d break.

Isaac couldn’t believe that Taylor was acting like this. It was just a pill after all. The doctor had said to only take them when they were needed.

Memory suddenly crashed in on him. Unprepared for the flood of pain, he cried out, and then dissolved into tears, completely unable to cope. Why hadn’t they just let him die?

Taylor chewed his lip, the seed of an idea forming, and he looked up at George, his mental question carrying clearly across to the old man.
George’s head swung around, startling Taylor back tight against the wall. The old man’s eyes glowed as red as flame, his voice arrowing laserlike into Taylor’s mind.
“I take care of Zac, you take care of Nick. Whatever you see fit to do.”
Then gone, tenuous permission.
Glancing with a sigh at the wreck of the traveler beside him, his mind made itself up.

I knew someone could die, but my brain kept skipping away from who. I knew I’d screwed up big time, and that it was even more likely that I would keep on screwing up, my head in no state to do anything.
I had to find him.
Seems easy, huh? I dropped him off, I knew who he was, and I knew where he was staying. Shouldn’t have been a problem.
Ever try to just go visit a celebrity in their hotel? When they don’t know you’re coming?

He sighed, heard the sigh, heard an answering sigh across the room, and jumped to his feet with a gasp of shocked fright.
“Omigod! You!”
Ben crossed the dusty room.
Fastidiously flicking his fingers at cobwebs dangling from the light fixture, his nose wrinkled in distaste as he breathed the air of a time he detested. Only for this boy would he make this trip. Only to stop him from foolishness did he stay.
