Oshin (1983) [ENG Subs] (Complete)

I started working on Oshin in May of 2012. It has taken me eight years to complete it. I’m sure it could’ve been done faster, but I’ve been working on subtitles for a number of other dramas over the years.

First of all I’d like to thank groink whose praises of Oshin led me to pick up this drama. Secondly, I want to thank Avallac’h, XrayMind, acEITe, kagi, and y0ssy for making this project possible and helping out with it.

Finally I’d like to dedicate this project to the founder Ruroshin (active 2003-2018), and admins MoerkJ and amrayu of D-Addicts. I can’t thank you enough for the community you created. Over the years I’ve met many wonderful people and gained my very best friends there. Thank you so very much!

How do you repay a debt of gratitude…?

  2. Just love watching Oshin- haven’t finished watching it – it’s very moving and touching – showing the
Injustice done in those times. Oshin plays a very strong character.

  3. Thanks a lot for your work.
Recently, NHK World broadcasted the subtitled version of a documentary with the actress Nakamura Yuri going to Uzbekistan. When she met young children living there, they told her that they knew some Japanese greetings. She was a bit surprised to see that they were familiar with Japanese culture. They told her it’s because they watched Oshin on tv. It’s really amazing to see the impact of Oshin around the world.

    • It’s an awful situation Oshin is in. I don’t know when she will be able to leave. I watch the drama as I sub it. I wonder what her life would’ve been like if she ended up with the other person. (Try to keep this reply spoiler free.)

    • Still working on episode 286-297.

The Chinese version have single episodes. The DVDRip have several episodes merged, therefore the delay.

Subtitles for episode 280-288 (DVDRip) will be released when episode 288 for the Chinese version is released. And episode 289-297 (DVDRip) will be released when episode 297 for the Chinese version is released.

  10. Dear Jean,

I grew up in the ’80s watching a dubbed version of Oshin. Over the years I’ve seen that version several times, but never the original Japanese version. I found this page by chance and I’ve had it bookmarked for several years. And now that the project is complete it’s time to start watching Oshin with its original Japanese audio for the first time. Thank you for letting me relive and add-on to a part of my childhood.

    • Thank you for your nice comment. It will probably take a little time to get used to the original version. There’s always the debate whether original is better compared to dubbed, like books compared to its movie version, or games with original vs dubbed audio. I wouldn’t blame you if you said you like the dubbed version better since you’ve grown up with it.

  11. Finally you have finished the English subtitle which I’ve been waited for years … thanks a lot Jean … 37 years already since my first watch in Malay subtitle with Japanese language … Now I can start watching Oshin again … For me I preferred the original Japanese version with English subtitle because I could feel their emotion directly …

  13. Thank you so much for the subtitles! However, I’m just having trouble playing for example episode 2 with the subtitles from episode 1 to 9…the subtitles just start as if it’s episode 1 xD
I tried using KMPlayer and VLC Media Player to adjust the synchronization but I can’t do anything…
Can you give me any steps on what to do? Thanks.

    • It sounds as if you are using the wrong subtitles with the wrong video.
I have timed the subtitles to 2 different versions.
The Chinese hardsubbed RMVB files version is for single episodes (ep1, 2, 3…) The DVD version has merged episodes. (ep1-9…)
I used Media Player Classic while timing and when watching videos.

  14. I downloaded the subtitles fine but how do i add them to each individual episode (since the episodes i have from my computer a individually 1 – 297). I am using VLC to stream it.

    Reply
    • Place the subtitles and individual RMVB files (Chinese hardsubs) in the same folder. Play the video. Make sure the subtitles and video have the same name, otherwise the subtitles won’t show up. The files should already be named correctly. If not, rename them if needed.

      Example
      Video: Oshin 001
      Subtitles: Oshin 001
