Excerpt: Josh felt exasperation settling on him again. Over and over again, a perfectly simple idea would set Taylor’s face into that puzzled, blank stare, and typical to form, the word “betrothal” had done it. “Yes Taylor, betrothal. Marriage? I assume you’ve heard of marriage? People DO marry where you’re from, don’t they?” “Well you don’t have to be so snotty about it. I didn’t know you were gonna get married, that’s all.” “Well… I don’t want to. And not to Grace, Good God, she’s all the fun of a heap of cow dung.” “Josh!” Taylor couldn’t stop the snort of horrified laughter.

Excerpt: “You’re going in there??” Taylor’s jaw dropped. Pub, he’d heard. Tavern, he’d heard. Each of those words, to his 90′s mind, suggested, wood, fireplaces, coziness. But this! This was a full out waterfront brothel! Andy chuckled, and hauled Taylor in by the sleeve. “What’s the matter, you shy?

Excerpt: Waking up on a tear-damp pillow had been the highlight of the day so far for Isaac. The tears, at least, had helped relieve some of the building internal pressure. But other than that, things just weren’t going well. The past four hours had been hell. FBI agents draped around the suite, enough recording equipment attached to phones to fill a good sized studio, everyone being questioned. And not reasonably questioned, either.

Excerpt: Taylor padded down the hall to the sitting room, his state of pleasant sleepiness enhancing the pleasure he felt, being here. The Dakota. Too afraid to appreciate it last night, too confused this morning, tonight it held wonder. “I’m really here… for now at least this is where I live…”

Excerpt: Taylor’s hand fell away from his head, as the boy stepped under the light, up close for the first time all day, eyes widened in disbelief. “My God…” The thought was so strong that for a moment he was afraid he’d spoken it, but no… Josh continued his examination of Taylor’s injury, uninterrupted. “My God he looks like Ike…” Oh not exactly. His face was softer, rounder, wider, more like the shape of his own, or more closely, Zac’s. The hair was slightly darker, much shorter of course, and so a great deal more curly. But God it was close. “He looks as if someone took the three of us and mixed us… they didn’t tell me we were related to this kid!”

Excerpt: Josh stuck to the shadows, slipping off his cap to arm sweat from his forehead, grimacing at the wet curls. God it was hot. And the encroaching evening did little to ease it. Where was this kid going? Josh quickened his pace, careful to stay well out of sight. Who was this boy? He was so strange, his manner of moving so odd, his behavior so bizarre!

Excerpt: Taylor bolted upright, the sudden noise jolting him awake, startling him badly. Eyes wide, sleep draped mind still unable to process, he stared wildly into the air as the incredible racket went on and on. Clattering, clanking, screech of metal on metal, sharp crackings, shouting voices… what on earth was going on out there? Shaking his head, knuckling at his eyes, he quickly aimed for the window, leaning out… bursting into sudden amazed laughter. “A traffic jam! It’s a traffic jam!” Some things never changed, and he gazed with surprise and delight at the tangle of carts, wagons, horses, pedestrians, bicycles… listened with easy familiarity to the cussing and shouting going on. “New York. It’s always been… it always will be…”

Excerpt: Moonlight shone in on the face of the sleeping boy, lighting it just enough for Benjamin to see it clearly. Reaching out gently, he touched his cheek, frowning a little. They’d heard him crying, and told themselves to stay out. If he wasn’t strong enough to deal with this, his loneliness and homesickness, his alienation, he wouldn’t be strong enough to deal with anything else. They’d waited for the door to open, for him to come to them, seeking comfort or release. To their mutual relief, it hadn’t.

Excerpt: Was it his fault Tay had taken off? No… He needed sleep, he insanely craved coffee, even though he rarely drank it, and he needed to find his brother. The police were huddled together, discussing options. Zac was all for digging the park into an archeological site, and he was losing patience.

Excerpt: Staring into the empty space where his family should be, he found himself willing it into reality. “Please, please, I’m sorry, just come back!” Familiar adrenaline surge, the burn of acid in his throat, and then a sudden unknown tingle… as if all of the nerves in his body were being shocked, and before his tear filled eyes there appeared, misty and wavering, almost but not quite there, the Trump. His shout of triumph was drowned out by the screech of tires and the blast of a car horn, causing him to jump back… into silence. The hotel was gone, the strange electric tingle diminishing. The sound of the angry cab driver’s horn drifted away on a breeze, leaving the boy standing… staring.
